PRE-PREP SCIENCE: IS IT TIDY?
In their recent Science class, our Preprep students discussed and learned the importance of being tidy. They discovered why it's essential for a happy and healthy environment.
Students took their learning beyond the classroom as they went around the school campus to check if the school was tidy. They picked up rubbish, put things back where they belonged, and straightened out cluttered areas, ensuring everything was in its proper place.
Through this hands-on experience, our Preprep students not only learned the importance of tidiness but also embraced the value of taking action to make a positive difference in their surroundings.
YEAR 5 SCIENCE: INVESTIGATING THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE CURRENT IN A CIRCUIT
In their recent Science class, the Year 5 students investigated some of the factors that affect the current in a circuit. They began by brainstorming the various factors that could affect the current in a circuit, and then they set up three different circuits based on the factors they identified. They compared the brightness of the bulbs in each circuit they assembled and drew conclusions based on their observations.
This is their third time setting up a circuit, and they had fun carrying out their activities. They are becoming more adept in designing, assembling, and connecting these circuits using the materials available in the laboratory. Students gain in-depth knowledge of their lesson through these activities in the lab.
YEAR 6 ART: PORTRAIT DRAWING
In Year 6 art class, our students explored how to draw portrait drawings. Students carefully selected their models or favorite people to draw, printing out their images to serve as inspiration.
Using a clever technique involving grid lines on their paper, our students set out to capture every detail with precision and skill. From subtle expressions to unique features, each stroke of their pencils brought their portraits to life.
Through this class activity, our Year 6 students not only honed their artistic talents but also gained a deeper appreciation for the art of observation and expression.
YEAR 10 CHEMISTRY: IONIC COMPOUNDS
Ionic compounds are made up of positive ions called cations and negative ions called anions. For example, the compound that is commonly called salt has the chemical name sodium chloride and is made up of positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions.
The identity of both the positive and negative ions in a compound can be determined using a number of chemical tests. In this practical class the year 10 students carried out tests on 3 solutions each of which had a different known ionic compound dissolved in it.
By doing these tests the students were able to use their observations to see what a positive result for each type of ion looked like.
The students were then given another solution in which an unknown compound was dissolved. They then carried out the various tests and used their results to determine the ions present in the compound from which they could then write its formula. Each student was able to successfully identify the ions present in the compound and they therefore deduced that the compound was aluminium chloride, AlCl3.
