STMARKS NEWSLETTER 24 (08 MARCH 2024)
IMPORTANT NOTICE – CHOKING HAZARD AWARENESS

At St. Mark’s, the safety and well-being of our students are of utmost priority. We are writing to bring to your attention a matter that requires your cooperation and vigilance to ensure the safety of all our students, especially those in the early years and primary levels.
In recent instances, we have observed the presence of certain foods in school that pose a potential choking hazard for young children. The items include but are not limited to, vitamin tablets, M&M candies, Mentos, and fruits like grapes. These foods, due to their size and shape, can pose a risk to children, and we would like to address this concern collectively.
Choking incidents can happen swiftly and have serious consequences. Therefore, we kindly request your assistance in being mindful of the foods your child brings to school. We encourage you to consider the size and shape of the items, as well as the potential risk they may pose for choking in young children.
To enhance the safety of our school environment, we recommend the following:
- Avoid sending small, hard candies or items with similar characteristics
- Cut fruits, such as grapes, into smaller, more manageable pieces
- Ensure that vitamin tablets are taken at home and not brought to school
- Consider alternative snacks that are age-appropriate and pose a lower risk of choking
By working together, we can create a safer environment for all our students. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your continued support in maintaining a secure and nurturing learning environment
MILITARY TRAINING FOR THAI MALE STUDENTS
We are happy to inform parents that St. Mark’s has obtained official approval for the inclusion of military field training for Year 10 to Year 12 Thai students starting this new academic year. This program will be conducted under the careful supervision of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).
It is important to emphasise that participation in military field training is entirely optional. Although we believe that this program can offer valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, leadership, and physical fitness, we also understand that each student has unique interests and goals, and this program may not be suitable for every student. Hence, we fully support families in making decisions that align with their priorities.

KINDER MANDARIN: ANIMALS
Our kinder students had a blast learning about animals and characters in our Kindergarten Mandarin class!
They started with a fun game where they found hidden pictures of animals. It helped them learn new words and how to recognize the Chinese characters.
After that, they picked their favorite animal characters and learned more about them. They talked about the animals and practiced saying their names in Mandarin.
To wrap things up, students sang a song called "Let's Go to the Zoo" with accompanying motions. It was a lively way to practice what they've learned.
Our kinder kids had a great time exploring Mandarin and all its fun parts!
YEAR 2 ENGLISH: RHYMING POETRY
Our Year 2 students had a fun time in class learning about poetry this week. They talked about two kinds of poems: acrostic and rhyming poems.
First, they started their class by reviewing their previous lesson about what acrostic poems are — where the first letters of each line spell out a word. Then, they were introduced to a new topic: rhyming poems! They learned how words can sound the same at the end of lines.
To help them understand the lesson better, students read some rhyming poems together. After that, they got to make their own rhyming poems as a class activity! The classroom was full of creativity as everyone wrote their special poems.
YEAR 4 MATHS: RULES OF MULTIPLICATION
Our Year 4 students practiced multiplication in their latest math class. Led by their teacher, the class delved into the fundamental rules of multiplication, discussing and understanding each one.
The teacher broke down the rules, providing clear examples to illustrate how to solve numerical problems. Students actively engaged in the learning process, eagerly absorbing the information. Following the explanations, it was hands-on practice time as students took to their whiteboards to try solving problems independently.
This interactive approach not only ensures a solid grasp of multiplication principles but also fosters a sense of confidence as students apply what they've learned.
YEAR 8 ENGLISH: CREATIVE WRITING
This week the Year 8 class started a new unit. This creative writing unit follows on from the successful poetry unit that the students actively took part in during the last five weeks. This unit will give the students an opportunity to use descriptive language, metaphors, personification, and other techniques from poetry in their descriptions.
During this week's lesson, the students were reminded of the idea of showing their ideas rather than telling their ideas. They were able to look out the window at Mr. Kung's PE lesson and find language to describe the different students participating in the PE lesson and describe how they thought the students were enjoying the lesson based only on what they could see and hear. In the coming weeks, we will focus on photos and a variety of pictures to describe what the students see. The work will be on display in the Year 08 homeroom.
