STMARKS NEWSLETTER 6 (16 SEPTEMBER 2022)
STUDENTS' EVALUATION

It has been just over a month since our students returned back to school. Our teachers have now put together their evaluations of each student under their supervision and responsibility. Student evaluations provide an opportunity to address any issue regarding students' learning while teaching is in progress. It is important that parents read and understand your child's progress and areas for improvement in their learning. This will allow parents to work with our teachers to address and fix any issue of concern, be it academic or personal, from the start of the school year.
To read your child's evaluation, please login to your Parent's Portal and click the "My Evaluation" icon found on the left-hand side of the Portal's navigation menu.
Should you have any concern with regard to this evaluation and you wish to discuss this matter further with our teachers, please feel free to contact our School Administration via an email or Line.
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
We are delighted to announce the following students who received our Award of Excellence. The Award of Excellence is given to students who exhibit the behaviors of Effort, Punctuality, Kindness, Leadership, Respect, and Creativeness throughout each semester.
As a way of acknowledging our students' achievements, students will be given a special "Award of Excellence Breakfast" on 23 September.

PREP ENGLISH: SHOW AND TELL
Show and Tell isn’t just about giving the kids a reason to bring toys to class; each child’s social, emotional, and language skills will grow and develop from this activity as the children learn to use descriptive language, practice listening skills, and share their special items with others. Sharing prized possessions with peers makes for a fun and comfortable learning arena for everyone involved.
Most young children love to show their prized possessions. Show-and-tell time gives a child a chance to be the centre of attention as he/she explains the significance of the item he/she brought while other children show interest and ask questions about that loved object. This positive social interaction can boost a child’s self-esteem and make him/her feel good about himself/herself.
YEAR 2 ENGLISH: SHOW AND TELL
Recently students in Year 2 participated in our "SHOW AND TELL" activity, which was slightly different from the Year 1 Show and Tell.
In Year 2, students were asked to actively guess various objects in their mystery box, one at a time. After a student has looked at this mystery object, other students who had not seen this object will be allowed to ask questions and the student who knows the object will tell whether or not the classmates' guesses were correct.
Students would need to constantly revise their guesses based on the response clues given and construct more precise expressions to confirm their guesses. During this process, our teacher was there to facilitate our students to provide new vocabulary to describe this mystery object.
This Show and Tell session not only allows students to exercise their speaking skills, but it also trains students on their critical thinking and listening skills.
YEAR 4 MATHS: MATHS BINGO
Our teachers often find new ideas to teach Math. When students are engaged in a Maths game, students soon realised that Maths can be fun. When Maths becomes lively and fun to learn, students perform better and this is the objective we are trying to achieve in every subject we taught at St. Mark's.
In this activity, our teacher arranged to have our students work on various multiplication and division questions on their own. Students were given a BINGO sheet with different numbers on it, and they were asked to find solutions to a series of questions posted in class. If they could find correct answers to each of the questions, they will have to mark the solutions on the sheet given. The first student who got a straight line of marked answers across the sheet won the game.
This Maths game assisted our students in improving their accuracy and speed when finding solutions to multiplication and division problems
YEAR 9 MATH: FUNCTIONS AND COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Year 9 students were learning about Functions and Composite Functions last week.
Our teacher first taught students how to substitute the value of an independent variable X to calculate the value of f(x) which was a dependent variable. Our teacher then posted some questions for students to solve on the whiteboard. Students were asked to work in pairs, with one student writing the steps in calculation on the board, while the other student explained to the class how they derived the solution.
After having a preliminary understanding of the concept of Functions, our teacher introduced a more advanced concept of Composite Functions. Again, students were asked to work in pairs and each group was required to provide their calculation and explanation on the board based on the question being posted.
By providing opportunities for students to solve Math questions on the board and explain the steps in deriving a solution, our students learn Math with a deeper understanding than when they only sit and listen. When students are able to explain to others the steps to get to a solution, they will master what they have learnt and remembered for a long time.
SRINAKARIN CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Despite a continuous period of heavy rainfall from August to September, we are pleased to inform you that our Srinakarin campus project has progressed much during the past month. The concrete structure of our 8-story building is now completed. Bricking and plastering of classroom walls have progressed to 70%. Piping for air-conditioning and electrical wires have already been installed in many parts of the school building.
During the next 2 months, our contractor will be working on fabricating the steel roof structure and roof installation.
