BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD TRAINING PROGRAM
Y1 MANDARIN: WHO’S THE SPY
In our Year 1 class, we reviewed the sentences learned through a game called ‘Who’s the Spy’, which allowed students to practice both reading and listening skills. We then introduced a new character, ‘pa 爬 (crawl)’, through actions. Students also practiced reading the related sentences using high and low voices to make reading more engaging. After the reading activities, students took a quiz to review all the sentences and practiced writing the new character.”
Y2 ANGKLUNG: YO SALAM SONG
Year 2 students learned about the traditional Thai song “Yo Salam” (also known as “Jang Ceylon”). This song is a royal composition by King Rama VI, adapted from a Portuguese melody that was introduced during the Ayutthaya period. The name “Jang Ceylon” refers to the old name of Phuket at that time. It is considered an important piece in Thai music education, as it is used by Thai music teachers to build a foundation in sound creation for learners. The song is played in a two-beat rhythm with a Western-style march influence.
Y4 ENGLISH: MUMMY NARRATIVES & PROJECTS
After reading The Search for Tutankhamen in English class, the Year 4 students wrote creative narratives imagining a person from ancient Egyptian times—a poor farmer, a skilled worker, or a powerful leader—and described how they lived, how they died, and how they were buried. They explored the mummification process, decided as a class how ornate their tombs would be, and brought their stories to life through models and a 3D tomb complete with canopic jars. Using descriptive language and careful sequencing, students shared their characters’ stories and demonstrated their understanding of ancient Egyptian mummies.
Y11 MATHEMATICS: PRODUCT, QUOTIENT, AND CHAIN RULE COMBINATIONS
Our Year 11 students explored Product, Quotient, and Chain Rule Combinations in differentiation. The lesson aimed to build confidence in knowing when and how to apply these rules, either individually or in combination, to solve complex problems.
Through guided practice, students learned to break down functions, apply the correct techniques, and present solutions step by step with emphasis on clear working, intermediate steps, and factorisation.
By the end, students were able to:
1️. Identify which differentiation rule(s) a problem requires.
2️. Apply product, quotient, and chain rules accurately in combination.
3️. Present logical, well-structured solutions.
This strengthened not only their understanding of advanced differentiation but also their skills in precision, clarity, and mathematical reasoning essential as they prepare for higher-level mathematics.
